Migration Tools for Stream Video Portal to SharePoint

Introduction

In this guide, we will walk you through the process of using Microsoft‘s migration tools to transfer your organization‘s videos from the Stream Video Portal (Stream Classic) to SharePoint. Microsoft has decided to phase out Stream Classic, making it essential to migrate your videos to SharePoint for better integration and management. This article will focus on the tools provided by Microsoft to facilitate this migration process.

The Migration Tools

Microsoft has developed a set of tools to assist you in seamlessly moving your videos from Stream Classic to SharePoint. These tools include:

  1. Powershell Script: This script is the first step in the migration process. It analyzes Stream Classic and exports a list of videos as a CSV file. While technically optional, running this script is recommended to gain a clear understanding of your organization‘s video inventory.
  2. Power BI Dashboard: Microsoft provides a sample Power BI dashboard that can be used to visualize and analyze the results obtained from the CSV file generated by the Powershell script. This step is also optional but can be beneficial for organizations with extensive video content.
  3. Migration Tool: The final tool is the actual migration tool that copies the videos from Stream Classic to SharePoint. This tool is essential for executing the migration process.

Running the Powershell Script

Before running the Powershell script, you will need the following information:

  • Your Microsoft 365 tenant ID.
  • A token to grant the script access to your Stream Classic content.

Here are the steps to run the script:

  1. Log in to your Microsoft 365 admin center and navigate to Stream then Migrations then Reports.
  2. Click the “Download Script“ button to obtain the Powershell script.
  3. Save the script in a convenient location on your computer.
  4. Find your Microsoft 365 tenant ID in the Microsoft 365 admin center and copy it.
  5. Obtain a token to access Stream Classic content by using your browser‘s developer tools. This token is crucial for the script to work.
  6. Save the token in a text file named “token.txt“ in the same folder where you saved the script.
  7. Open your Powershell command line, navigate to the folder containing the script, and run it using the provided parameters (tenant ID, input file path, and output directory).

The script will generate a report containing video names and metadata, helping you understand your video inventory.

Power BI Dashboard (Optional)

For those who prefer visual analysis, Microsoft offers a sample Power BI dashboard that can be used to examine the CSV report file created by the Powershell script. To use the dashboard:

  1. Download Power BI Desktop from Power BI Desktop.
  2. Download the sample Power BI dashboard from the Stream admin center by clicking the “Review Documentation“ button.
  3. Open the Power BI template file in Power BI Desktop.
  4. Provide the path to the CSV report file generated by the Powershell script.
  5. Load the data into the dashboard, where you can visualize and analyze it more intuitively.

Migration Tool

The migration tool is the final step in the process. It copies videos from Stream Classic to SharePoint. While the specifics of migration strategies and user notifications are essential considerations, this guide focuses on the technical tools. In conclusion, Microsoft‘s migration tools simplify the process of moving your organization‘s videos from Stream Classic to SharePoint. By following these steps and utilizing the provided tools, you can ensure a smooth transition and efficient management of your video content within SharePoint.

Scanning and Adding Containers

Containers are used by the migration tool to group videos from Stream Classic. You should see some containers in your overview. If not, click the “Add Containers“ link in the toolbar. There are three ways to add containers:

  • Automatically find stream content.
  • Specify a single video container.
  • Upload a CSV file containing paths of all the stream containers to migrate.

For this demo, we‘ll let the Stream Migration Tool find the containers for us.

  1. Click “Look for New Containers in Stream.“
  2. Choose the option to automatically start scanning containers when found.
  3. Click “Add“ to add containers to your scans list.

Once scanned, you‘ll see the scan status as “Completed.“

Adding Content to the Migration List

After scanning, it‘s time to add the scanned content to your migration list.

  1. Select the container(s) you want to migrate.
  2. Click the “Add to Migration“ button in the toolbar.
  3. Continue with the migration setup.

Configuring Migration Paths

Migration paths determine where your videos will be placed in SharePoint. Paths can be automatically assigned, but you can also customize them.

  1. Click the “Migrations“ tab at the top of the migration tool page.
  2. View the containers you‘ve added for migration.
  3. Edit paths by clicking on a container without checking the box.
  4. Select the destination - OneDrive or SharePoint.
  5. For OneDrive, enter the user‘s email or name.
  6. For SharePoint, select a site and document library or create a new library.
  7. Click “Save Path.“

Folders will be created during the migration process within the selected library or folder:

  • A “Stream Migrated Videos“ folder.
  • A corresponding folder for each video container.

Initiating the Migration

With setup complete, it‘s time to migrate the videos.

  1. Select the containers to migrate.
  2. Click the “Migrate“ button in the toolbar.
  3. Read and acknowledge the important notes.
  4. Click “Migrate“ at the bottom of the panel.

Migration time varies based on the number and size of videos. Check the migration status column for progress updates.

Post-Migration Actions

After migration, verify your videos in SharePoint:

  1. Open your SharePoint site.
  2. Navigate to the location specified during migration.
  3. Browse the containers to access video files.

SharePoint allows you to treat videos like any other file type. You can copy, move, and play them directly in the file viewer.

Adding Videos to SharePoint Pages

Unlike Stream Classic, SharePoint does not have dedicated web parts for videos. Instead, use the Files and Media web part:

  1. Add the “Files and Media“ web part to your SharePoint page.
  2. Browse to the library with your migrated videos.
  3. Select the video to add to the page.
  4. Customize video settings using the settings panel.

Conclusion

This guide concludes our overview of the Stream Video Migration Tools. While the process may seem complex, these tools simplify the transition from Stream Classic to SharePoint. Migrating your videos ensures better integration and management, allowing you to harness the full power of SharePoint for your organization‘s multimedia content.
